TUP holds 1st Philippine Scholars Convention

MANILA - The Philippine Society of Scholars of the Technological University of the Philippines-Manila conducted the 1st Philippine Scholars Convention on February 03, 2017 at the Conference Hall, Integrated Research Training Center (IRTC), TUP-Manila. The event’s theme was with the theme: "Inspiring Individuals, Transforming Community of Leaders through Education for Sustainable Development."

Participants of the 1st Philippine Scholars Convention composed of administrators, scholarship directors and scholars from different universities in the country.

The event which was attended by administrators, scholarship directors and scholars from different universities in the country aimed to increase awareness on current scholarship opportunities here and abroad, inspire young men and women to seek or accept leadership responsibilities as part of their contribution to social transformation, provide and support exchange and dissemination of ideas and knowledge on leadership and scholarship opportunities; and to develop a network of students, scholars and young professionals to support future collaboration.

Dr. Adora S. Pili, TUP President in her welcome remarks praised the scholars for their academic discipline and intelligence. She encouraged them to become agents of positive change and socio-economic progress.

Meanwhile, Dr. Alex B. Brillantes, Jr. CHED Commissioner and Chairman, TUP Board of Regents said in his inspirational remarks that the theme of the event was appropriate for the scholars. He told the scholars that more is expected from them because they are gifted. He added, CHED is ready to support scholarships because they are the empowering mechanisms so scholars can become transformational leaders.

The inspirational message of Senator Grace L. Poe was read by his son, Mr. Brian Poe-Lamanzares. She conveyed the need for the youth to be taught the proper values and to become "servant leaders." It is thru molding the youth properly that the country move forward and be a first world nation, she added.

Ms. April Joyce Co, Focal Person, Expanded Students' Grants-in-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation (ESGPPA) also inspired and encouraged the scholars to bring back the good harvest as part of their involvement in nation building and social transformation.

The Keynote Speaker was Mr. Louie Ferrer, President, Megawide Foundation. He spoke about the "Key Components to Effective Leadership for Sustainable Development." Mr. Ferrer disclosed that Megawide Corporation is ever committed to helping the youth reach their full potential by transforming our schools and communities into agents of sustainable development and inclusive growth.

The second half of the convention featured a plenary session, panel discussion and the oath taking of the new set of officers of the Philippine National Association of Scholars. On the plenary session, five topics were discussed by respective plenary speakers. The first was Fundamentals of Mentoring and Coaching of Outstanding Leaders by Mr. Konrad Chua, Executive Director, Charity First Foundation, Inc. The succeeding topics were, Habits of Highly Successful Scholars and Outstanding Leaders, by Ms. Catherine P. Lemon, HR Manager, Gakken Philippines, Inc.; European Commission’s Erasmus Scholarship Opportunities by Mr. Celso Manangan, Representative, Erasmus Mundus Program; DOST Scholarship Opportunities by Ms. Ma. Daisy A. Demoni, OIC, DOST-SEI-STSD; Australia Awards Scholarship Opportunities for Filipino Leaders and Achievers by Ms. Etrelita Boskovic, Program Officer, Australian Embassy and Ms. Milalin Javellana, Facility Director, Philippines-Australia Human Resource and Organizational Development Facility.

The Panel Discussion centered on the topic, Invest in Education and Scholarships; Best CSR Practices for Sustainable Development. The speakers were Engr. Ronald N. Gaspar, Assistant VP and Operations Manager, Toyota Motor Phils., Foundation; Mr. Danilo Madlansakay, Executive Director, Megaworld Foundation; Ms. Camille B. Buenaventura, Executive Director, San Miguel Foundation; Ms. Regin Penaflor-Anacay, CSR, Manager, Cosmic Technologies, Inc.; and Ms. Alyanna Keisha D. Kibanoff, Program Officer, Gokongwei Brothers Foundation.

Dr. Margaret S. Aquino, Director, Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and Overall Chairman of the event in her closing remarks expressed her sincerest gratitude to everyone who supported and made great contributions during the 1st Philippine Scholars Convention for Leadership Excellence.

The event was endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs of TUP, Cosmic Technologies, Inc. and Center for Community Transformation, Inc. and supported by different industries and government agencies such as Megawide Foundation, Inc., Charity First Foundation, Inc., Gakken Philippines, Inc., European Union Delegation to the Philippines, Department of Science and Technology, Australian Embassy to the Philippines, German Embassy to the Philippines, Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation, Inc., San Miguel Foundation, Inc., Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, Inc. Office of Senator Grace Poe, Office of Senator Cayetano, Cabinet Secretary Jun Evasco, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform, Technical Education Skills and Development Authority, National Economic and Development Authority and Department of Budget and Management.

Prof. Randyman M. Bulaquit, National Convention Director and University Scholarship Coordinator (OSA), facilitated the event and he is optimistic that the second Philippine Scholars Convention would soon be realized in the near future.
