Expanding from its historical roots in providing technology education, the Technological University of the Philippines, (TUP) has now emerged as an institution that provides programs that focus on many of the technology-based knowledge and skills required by our society as it faces increasing competition in global economy.
In a world where every aspect of life is increasingly dependent upon technology and its applications, the University, even with its meager resources, strives to promote and provide capacity-building and education in technology to create a technologically literate society.
The University believes that in the coming years, an increasing number of decisions, whether related to the economy, the environment and even political issues, etc., will be based on technology, therefore, it has shown more than its concern to the youth of today who have increasing affection for technology, but who are not financially well-off to become technologically erudite because they will be the citizens and decision makers of tomorrow.
TUP’s theme for this year is “TUP @ 108: A Legacy of Technological Excellence,” which is a reassuring indication that it is committed to continue providing quality education in technology.
The record shows that TUP with centuries of hard work to generate new knowledge and skills especially in technology is second to none. Thereby, the University has in no small way produced students who have gone on to make a difference in the world. In fact, some of its students topped the board licensure examinations or performed exceptionally well in other related competitions. And significantly, some of its educators produced research outputs that are contributory to the development of new laws for the country.
Among the many of today’s educational institutions that are dedicated and designed to science and technology, TUP has its own rightful place.
Its mission, which is as follows: “The University shall provide higher and advanced vocational, technical, industrial, technological and professional education and training in industries and technology, and in practical arts leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees.
It shall provide progressive leadership in applied research, developmental studies in technical, industrial, and technological fields and production using indigenous materials; effect technology transfer in the countryside; and assist in the development of small-and-medium scale industries in identified growth centers.”
In view of this mission, its President Dr. Olympio V. Caparas envisions the Technological University of the Philippines as a Center of Excellence in technological and industrial education in the country and in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Being a national university for science and technology, TUP will continue to develop citizen-workers who will be skillful, innovative, competent, knowledgeable, and morally upright, and competitive here and abroad.
This year’s celebration of the 108th anniversary of TUP expresses once more its solid commitment to be a living legacy in technological excellence for the country.
