TUPian tops Art Petron '08
Posted on 01.20.2009 | Published in The Philippine Artisan [Vol. LXIV No. 1]Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising student Christian Erick Villaruz, second year, proved that Technological University of the Philippines could maintain its title for three consecutive years by being the grand prize winner in the Art Petron 2008, oil painting category.

The art tilt themed "
Alay sa Pistang Pilino" aims to depict the iconic culture of the country through colorful fiestas. The contest was composed of three categories namely: oil painting (with 350 entries), watercolor (150) and photography (480).
Villacruz bagged the award through his work entitled
Massquerade. Other grand prize winners at the same category were: Blaine Louis Rosales of the University of Santo Tomas (Ipagpatuloy ang Daloy ng Alon); and Ronald Jeresano of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Manila (Panatang Obra).

Moreover, winners at the water color category was composed of: Rommel Ramota of Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Manila (Ang Pundasyon ng Kasiyahan); Gerald Mungkal of Chasse Arteskwela Tarlac (Mga Nakakubling Ngiti ng Pagdiriwang); and Alex ordoyo of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (Dinagyang Festival).
Furtheremore, in photography, Vincent Kho (Sinulog Festival) and Mari Rose Angeline Lim (Apung Iru Festival), both from Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation; Paul Allyson Quimabao (Season of Grade), Marcelino Bugaon, Jr. (Indayog), and Alexa Remalante (Lugod) from the University of Santo Tomas; and Hadrian Aguilar (Pagkakaisa ng mga Kulay) from Visayas State University attained the highest winning.
National Artist and head judge of Art Petron 2008 Napoleon Abueva declared that the entries in Art Petron get better every year. "
There is indeed a bright future for Philippine art," Abueva added.
Grand winners in the oil painting and watercolor division were awarded PhP 50,000 and valuable handcrafted trophy made by Abueva. Grand winners in the photography division received PhP 30,000 and the same Abueva plaque. The awarding happened at the Petron Megaplaza, Makati city, September 20, 2008.
In addition, the department of the winner received multimedia projector as an incentive.
